Ice Queen

He's an astute observer of people.
He's usually never wrong.

He tells me, that I need to be loved by women, that I constantly crave their validation,  and so to gain that love and validation I will do anything they ask me.

I resented that.

I'm not like that.
I think.

I'm never sure...his eyes have a way of convincing you the absurdest of the lies he spouts out.

I tell him,"I don't even believe in love"

"So..who was she?", he asked.

"Who?",

"The one that broke your heart?",

"You won't believe me if I told you...", I said.

"Try me", he said.

"She was an imaginary woman of my creation...the perfect ice queen whose primary goal in life was to reject all men, while hoping and waiting for her Prince Charming."

I took a long breath before I could continue...I had to say it in a single breath, or else I would never be able to say it at all.

" I've placed this imaginary woman's mask on several women till date... and most of them have outright rejected it...but it fit one person very well, and it became her...no, not because she had all the qualities of my imaginary ice queen, but because I helped her bring it out slowly and gradually, until the mask got lost somewhere in the persona.

The objective of the entire exercise (futile as it may seem now) was to bring about a change in me (which it did in the end) but it had unintended(and tragic) consequences that it changed her as well.

I feel so ashamed of myself that I've stopped talking to her, distanced myself from her and hope that someday she might forgive me."

"It's too late to ask for forgiveness", he said,"she will hate you for the rest of her life".

"I know" I said.

Fatso: Ortho-Tyranosaurus Rex

Mom read something on the net about a new health crisis, and sent it over to me.

Orthorexia!

People who are too healthy or obsessed with being too healthy!

These are the very same people who go out to a restaurant only to eat salad, and top it off with a mouthful of mineral water, while you're having the entire menu as the  entree`.
Then they give you that look...the look of concealed disgust and pity...a pity that goes 'tch tch' in your face. You know that although they wanted to, they  haven't yet said 'oink oink' to your face yet.

These are the same people who advocate vegetarianism as a cure it all for cancer, constipation or a colorectomy.

These are the same people constantly yak nonstop about exotic food supplements and wonder drugs with miraculous effects.
I mean how do you know if  Yohimbe is something like Nintendo?

These are the same people who stuff exercise advice down your throat when you are happily noshing on a bag of doritos.

The high and mighty and the know it all...with nauseating self righteousness around them.

Oh how you hate them.

Oh how you want to stuff butter chicken down their throats and see them enjoy it, and get fat, and cry bitterly.

But mom, am I an orthorexic?
Sure I'm a picky eater...but that's because our entire family is made of picky eaters.

Sure I'm a vegetarian...but only because the rest of the family is vegetarian.

Sure I like to exercise...But that's only because the rest of the family exercises a lot.

Sure I like to read about healthy living...but that's only because the rest of the family does it, all the time.

Mom...do you think...I have become some kind of a Monster...Orthotyranosauraus Rex...a tyrant king orthorexic ?

If so, know that you have created this monster...a monster with sculpted pecs, bulging biceps, washboard abs, teardrop quads and glutes you can bounce a coin off.You are responsible.Yes YOU!

Mom, I may be a monster, but don't I deserve happiness?

Then stop accusing me of taking supplements and protein shakes to grow into a grotesque muscular hulk that you so readily despise.

For the last time, I'm not taking any supplements...They are expensive crap that will ultimately damage the body...C'mon Mom! you know that I know better.

How to Break Up for Good

Psychologists have been exploring the 'Crossing the Threshold' phenomenon for quite some time now.
The phenomenon of 'Going over the Threshold' occurs when a person who has  been in very intense and meaningful relationship with another person for an  extended period , suddenly breaks off all contact with the other individual ,  determined to never see or speak to him or her again.
This usually results from the other person crossing some line that is the last straw with respect to their relationship.

Unfulfilled expectations, broken promises, shattered trust et al.

How many thresholds have you crossed today?
How many expectations have you left unfulfilled?
How many trusts shattered and promises broken?

In order to congruently end the relationship 'for good', people somehow delete or reframe the many positive experiences that they shared with  the other persons.
In doing so, all the negative memories, attributes and habits that the person  had previously overlooked would come into the foreground of people's  awarenness, while the positive ones would recede into the background.

Suddenly the rose tinted shades become jaundiced.
And love turns to hate.
And hate solidifies into cold indifference.

This is what you  should do if you want to break up for good.
Trust me.
It works.

Quantum of Solace is a story of a relationship where the worst is brought out of a man, when he is denied that 'Quantum of Solace' that ought to be given to maintain his dignity as a functioning social being in a  society and by crossing the threshold by actions that  arouse his deepest fears and feral survival instincts.

I liked Ian Fleming's Quantum of Solace.(Not the movie)
The pdf attachment will tell you the rest of the story.

Hint: It is a love story.
        NOT.

A picture's worth

A picture's worth is an experiment, and probably one of my last stories.

These things have never happened

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

Cruel Love, but Love Nonetheless

Times change and so do people.Things get a little strange when you've been away for so long and back.

I don't know if what I feel for you is love. But if it not, then I never want to fall in love.

Let us not dwell upon lost love, for there is little meaning to the things one loses. The glory of things meant to be lost is not true glory, or so said some old philosopher.

Its true that I want to hurt you,
but its not because I'm cruel.
Its no longer because of how much you hurt me
It's because I feel so weak and powerless with you
that I want to see some pain in your eyes and feel a little stronger.

Its Cruel Love, but love nonetheless.

In love we fight, taunt, goad, argue, analyse, taint, doubt each other and ourselves...and as humans thats how we love each other- imperfectly, clumsily, hastily, greedily.

How can we expect perfect love from such horribly misshapen imperfect beings such as ourselves?

This is how as people , we love one another, without ever realising how much our love can hurt.

I never stopped loving you,but I have stopped showing it.

Desperado

Let Somebody Love You...before its too late.

One of my all time favourite songs...I always thought it spoke out to me.

Great Expectations

There is no humanly comprehensible absolute truth out there, only differing viewpoints and theories.

George Carlin had his take and Scott Adams has his own.

No matter how tongue-in-cheek or scientifically grounded something is it can never be the entire truth, but only a simplified model of reality.

It is a good model of reality only if it is of any use to you, if you can successfully apply it. Only you can decide whether anything is a good model.

So here we go again...From Scott Adams.

"Women believe that men are, in a sense, defective versions of women; Men believe that women are defective versions of men.

(Although I don’t believe that either is defective)

Both genders are trapped in a delusion that their personal viewpoints are universal.

That viewpoint—that each gender is a defective version of the other—is the root of all misunderstandings.

Women define themselves by their relationships and men define themselves by whom they are helping.

Women believe value is created by sacrifice. If you are willing to give up your favorite activities to be with her, she will trust you.

If being with her is too easy for you, she will not trust you. You can accomplish your sacrifices symbolically at first, by leaving work early to buy flowers, canceling your softball game to make a date, that sort of thing.

Why does it seem like the rich and famous guys get all the women?

It is partly because the rich and famous are capable of making larger sacrifices. The average man might be sacrificing a night of television to be with a woman. The rich and famous man could be sacrificing a week in Tahiti. There is much to be said about the attraction of power and confidence exuded by a rich and powerful man, but capacity for sacrifice is the most important thing.

(I may not be rich or famous but Oh! I’ve sacrificed a lot- a lot of time and effort ...even money! More that I’d ever admit. But it was only because I believed she was worth every bit of it.

I’d be ashamed if I did it for myself,if I had selfish reasons, but honestly I did it for her.)

Men believe value is created by accomplishment, and they have objectives for the women in their lives. If a woman meets the objectives, he assumes she loves him. If she fails to meet the objectives, he will assume she does not love him. The man assumes that if the woman loved him she would have tried harder and he always believes his objectives for her are reasonable.

What objectives?

The objectives are different for each man. Men rarely share these objectives because doing so is a recipe for disaster.

(Elsewhere in my blog I have used the term expectations instead of objectives. They both mean the same in the given context.

Unfulfilled  or broken expectations (objectives), in my opinion, cause most of the heartbreaks. I may have been guilty of thinking that my expectations could be easily met by her, because others have met it often without much effort and often without my wanting or asking)

No woman would tolerate being given a set of goals.

(I know that because I've tried that. Never give a woman a list of things that you expect from her. She'll find it demeaning.

Scott Adams tells you that women wouldn't tolerate it.

Of course that's true...Once you have told her…then...It is the loss of innocence…it is finally facing the naked truth …that things could have been better…but once acknowledged the knowledge hangs prominently like an ugly stain –an ugly stain of truth…which we all had pretended that it did not exist in the first place. There is a saying in Sanskrit which goes “Say the truth, or say what is sweet to hear. Do not say the truth that is bitter to swallow.”)

So what should a guy do if the woman in his life doesn’t meet these secret objectives? How can he get her to change?

He can’t.(Deep resounding evil maniacal laughter)

People don’t change to meet the objectives of other people. Men can be molded in small ways—clothing and haircuts and manners—because those things are not important to most men. Women can’t be changed at all!

(Is Scott Adams implying that women value their individuality more than men? BUT I'm so glad to know that! It means that I don't have to wait anymore; because I know people are incapable of change .

Not just women, even Men cannot be changed where it matters to them.Try to make a chain smoker quit smoking and you’ll know)

The best you can hope for in a relationship is to find someone whose flaws are the sort you don’t mind. It is futile to look for someone who has no flaws, or someone who is capable of significant change; that sort of person exists only in our imaginations!

(At the end of the day, I’d choose someone with whom I can comfortably talk to for hours than a beautiful yet dumb bimbo who'd make me yawn after five minutes. in it for the long term. After years, beauty may fade, but the comfort factor can only increase between two people. I want to get old comfortably but not bored.)

Kenton Knepper, a world famous mentalist writes "There is a main difference between the way men and women face life: Men choose, but women decide.

Men concentrate on options. Women focus on the act of actually deciding. Since the role of men in society has been primarily the same, the role of a provider, men tend to walk straight paths, even when there is doubt or failure. Women face now the possibility of becoming providers and by doing so they usually reject their traditional role as mothers and supporters of men.

When men choose, they are choosing between one option and the other one, in a forward motion. Women always have the feeling of being forced to decide a completely different path in each choice, not options on the path. This generates a lot of tension and worry. Contemporary women are often wondering if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Different from men, that "other side of the fence" is not another job or venture, but an entirely different way of life.

Women also tend to feel that they give too much and that their partners do not always reciprocate their investment. This is especially true in matters of communication and emotion.

And back to Scott Adams…

A woman needs to be told that you would sacrifice anything for her. A man needs to be told he is being useful

(It’s true…the worst you can make any man feel is to make him feel inconsequential.I remember a scene from the movie Young Victoria, where Prince Albert makes an earnest confession when he says “I wish to be of use to you”.

That is how men show they love you…by being useful to you. Young Queen Victoria replies that she understands ,but not yet. Here they are candid about it and understand each other)

When the man or woman strays from that formula, the other loses trust. When trust is lost, communication falls apart.

Without trust, you can communicate only trivial things. If you try to communicate something important without a foundation of trust, you will be suspected of having a secret agenda. Your words will be analyzed for hidden meaning and your simple message will be clouded by suspicions.

How can I be more trusted?

You should lie about your talents and accomplishments, describing your victories in dismissive terms as if they were the result of luck. And you should exaggerate your flaws.

(I believe that being able to lie to a certain extent is necessary for a good relationship, especially if it is about not hurting them with insensitive honesty….No honey, you look fabulous in that dress, Of course , you can repair that engine all by yourself, No son…you are not a weirdo)

Isn't’t it better to be honest?

Honesty is like food. Both are necessary, but too much of either creates discomfort. When you downplay your accomplishments, you make people feel better about their own accomplishments. It is dishonest, but it is kind.

(My friend does that. He is incredibly talented and has accomplished a lot when you compare him to the rest of his peers. Yet no one is ever jealous of him. In all my years, I would be at awe at his towering intellect and genius, but never even once was jealous of him. He never allowed it to happen! He would constantly attribute his successes to luck than his efforts. He is kind and considerate in that way that he doesn’t rub his success in our collective faces. In many ways, I'm proud to have him as my friend and value his opinions.)

What about small talk?

You think casual conversation is a waste of time. Your problem is that you view conversation as a way to exchange information.

Conversation is more than the sum of the words. It is also a way of signaling the importance of another person by showing your willingness to give that person your rarest resource: time. It is a way of conveying respect. Conversation reminds us that we are part of a greater whole, connected in some way that transcends duty or bloodline or commerce.

Conversation can be many things, but it can never be useless.

(I always remember what Raknax wrote. He nailed it on the head when he wrote “Conversation is the King”. I remember that reading it made me think that I should have friends like him.)

A few other ingredients for successful social living:

Express gratitude. (Check)

Give more than is expected

(I always give more than I receive. Why? Volume! Volume! Volume! )

Speak optimistically (check).

Touch people (ok, this will be hard. I’m a little touchy on that issue).

Remember names (check).

Don’t confuse flexibility with weakness

(This ones hard. When does flexibility become weakness? Is bending backwards a sign of flexibility or a weak spine?).

Don’t judge people by their mistakes; rather, judge them by how they respond to their mistakes (Ok, I’ll wait and watch).

Remember that your physical appearance is for the benefit of others (check).

Attend to your own basic needs first; otherwise you will not be useful to anyone else. (Check)

-heavily paraphrased from Scott Adams’  ‘God’s Debris’.

(Finally I’d like to add that I don’t want anyone to be compelled to fall in love with me, just because I love her.

It doesn’t matter whether I’ve loved you for 7 years or seventy.

If you don’t love me, IT’S OK.

It was just something that was not meant to be.

Who knows…maybe by not falling in love with me, you might have done me a favour.

I don’t want anyone to fall in love with me because I’ve blackmailed her…or because she’s the only one I’ve ever loved. Love is sometimes a one-way street.)

Crappy Poet, Crappy Love (And an interview with Dr.Freud)

I'm going through that phase again.
That Crappy Poetry phase.
I'm not a poet , I constantly remind myself, lest I make a mockery of the art and myself.
But in going through the phase an urge develops much like an itch in the crotch, to fill up scraps of paper with alliterative analogies and rhyming sonnets and rhythmic couplets and unintelligible haiku.

Here is my latest debacle...

Oh Heart! Do not misbehave
as you reminisce once again,
Do not flutter,do not falter
But remember
for it once lingered on my skin,
a touch so precious like warm glowing embers
that smoldered deep within
The memory of her face,
of that sweet secret place,
it's warmth kept many winters at bay   (sigh audibly for effect)

TA-DAAAAA!

Hey, did you know that I wrote songs as a kid ?

Yeah...All I needed was a tune...I'd make the rest up myself, lyrics and all.

Wanna hear the cockroach song?
I made it up after hearing a jingle on Tv.

Arrrggghhhh !

I need to stop this madness...

I need a distraction that will stop me from thinking.I'm addicted to reading because it stops me from thinking...thinking all those thoughts that have no use and cause too much grief.

Here we go again...(oh No ! Not again!)

I was lost.
I used to think she'd save me.

But she confessed that she too needed saving.
She was lost too.

I told her about the famous myth from Plato's Symposium;that People were hermaphrodites until God split them in two, and now all the halves wander the world over seeking one another.

Love is the longing for the half of ourselves we have lost.

We were but lost in this vast sea of chaos , searching for our other halves...
But we would not enmesh perfectly with each other.
We weren't meant to.
But this was as close as I could get to perfection.
So would she consider my unworthy self to be worthy enough ? I enquired meekly...

In reply ,She confessed that she too needed saving...But not by me, but rather she needed to be saved from me.

By Me.
From Me.
Big difference.

Ah...the stabbing pain of semantics! The grief that then lingers like the scent of a loved one, now long gone.

Grief is addictive, they say.

What's going on in the grief stricken person is this: we are seeing ourselves with the loved ones who are now gone, and unavailable somehow.
Our  response called"grief or "sense of loss" is a complex response to being dissociated from those memories.

It's when we reminisce about our ninth birthday...when we blew all the candles and wished for something petty- a toy, and not for love, comfort or happiness.
It's when we see our loved ones and ourselves having a good time, and  feel empty because we are not there in the picture.

And we do it over and over again, till it becomes second nature.

Grief is a form of practised suffering.

She confessed that she needed to be saved from me.
Not by me.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but semantics...sweet Stabbing Semantics.
Your words,  their agony and antics ...You've got me on my scabby knees.

I was disgusted at my own weakness and decided to let her live in peace and without fear.
But she was addicted to me, as I was to grief.
We both wouldn't let go.

(Shut Up.
 Stop it.
Stop what you're doing to yourself.
No good can ever come of it.
If you don't stop it, I'm gonna beat the pulp outta you till you promise to stop for good)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Interview)

Dr.Freud, can you tell us why this young man, your patient, is obsessed with writing such posts?

Dr Freud: As far as I can see, it is not oedipus complex. In fact it is not related to sex at all.

The patient has confessed that he has a very asexual notion of love...i.e love without any lust or sin.

He believes that love and sex are entirely independent of each other.

A peculiar notion for such a young man and not a particularly a useful one in case he ever wants to start a family, or a rather good excuse to start an extramarital affair.(I just slept with her honey, but I'll always love you and no one else)

So since there is no sex involved,my particular brand of psychotherapy is not very helpful here.I would have suggested that he resolve his issues with his mother, but having met both of them on several occasions, I have to conclude that on the surface they don't seem to have any major issues.
But if you dig deep enough , you'll always unearth some issues. If not, I can create some now and resolve them later.

In my opinion, the patient has schizoid tendencies. My student Wilhelm...I mean Dr.Reich is an expert in that field. You should be talking to him , not me.
Let me explain.
The patient tells me that he hears these stories in his head. That alone should make him a prime candidate for a full frontal lobotomy.Other symptoms are that he constantly merges truth with fiction and constantly blurs the borders between what is real and what is unreal. For example, for anyone who knew him as a kid, it would be apparent that he's telling the truth about writing songs. He has sung a few of his childhood compositions to me.These songs employ childish humour, double entendres and other simplistic wordplay while retaining the general melodic structure of the original song.

But the next part is entirely a piece of fiction.
For one, the patient has confessed that he has never read Plato's Symposium, much less having told it to his unrequited love.
He simply found the quote somewhere and decided to use it in this particular context. But since he merges truth with fiction so frequently, it is almost impossible for a casual reader to make that fine distinction between fact and fiction.

He uses de-individuation constantly. He writes in first person and never names all the other characters in his stories.By not naming anyone, including himself, he creates  blank template personalities for the readers to fill in.In this way, the reader is invited to imagine himself or herself as one of the characters of his stories.
I'm told that seance mediums and other charlatans employ the same trick among others, to fleece the gullible.

It is said that every artist, writer, poet writes about himself, because he is limited to that point of view forever. So you see recurring themes & motifs in various authors, poets , musicians- and with time and enough sensitivity and with enough familiarity, you can recognise the signature piece of every artist.
Haruki Murakami's stories of unrequited love, being a third wheel, an empty life, an indescribable longing for something more, and the sudden denouement are his signature styles.
Similarly, this is this young man's signature style. He has taken a single memory of something that has never occurred and wrung it out again and again over time to produce what you see in front of you now. Most of his stories have never happened, but he is delusional because he believes that if they were to happen, this would be the only way it would happen.

One of his most strongly held beliefs is that no matter how good he becomes, eventually he will be rejected, but that does not stop him from improving himself. In fact, this belief only makes himself propel harder at excelling himself. He does not fear rejection...he expects it every time and if not he engineers rejection in some way so that he can still hold on to his belief.
Thus he too is stuck with being somewhat repetitive, but at the same time safely familiar and oddly endearing.

His is a story that is so unremarkable that it is all too real and all too possible.
It could have happened with anyone, especially with young men with no particular success with women. It could also have happened with any beautiful girl who has faced a host of such luckless and pathetic men.

The structure is ingenious that it would apply to both genders-masculine and feminine equally.I'm not calling him a genius though.I think it's just beginner's luck.

The patients story would also appeal to a casual reader because of one particular reason which I'd like to elaborate.
The patient makes a remarkably insightful comment that he is addicted to grief. In my knowledge, a cigar can be a penis, and sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but almost everyone is drawn to grief like a moth to a flame.

The casual reader, whose life, the patients story does not echo, can also benefit from the brief and impersonal catharsis that he or she undergoes along with the protagonist of the brief story.I would say that it is almost like having a small cry just to feel lighter inside.

The patient confessed to me that he didn't actually want to post this as he had written it over two years ago because he fears that it can hurt some of his readers. But he wants his crappy poem, pardon my scatological reference, to see the light of day.He claims that he wrestles with his literary desires and moral obligations constantly.

I  assume that anyone who thinks these stories echo their own lives are going to endlessly torture themselves.
I hope god be with their tormented souls.

If not, I can always talk to them about penis envy and oedipus complex.

Uh...Thank you Dr.Freud for such an illuminating insight on your patient.

Dr.Freud:Please call me Sigmund...Doctor Freud sounds so stuffy.

Tell me one thing though doctor...er, Sigmund...Have you ever met a blonde kid with blue eyes who says "I see dead people"?

Ode to a Petty Man

Ode to a petty man
------------------

He said, I still love her,
but I can't stand her anymore.
That was the saddest thing
I'd ever heard.

He was a petty man
making molehills as big as can be
Forgiveness was not his strongest suit (neither was forgetfulness)
and he was a petty man, petty as can be

He was a selfish man,
He wanted what he could not have.
Broken Expectations! he muttered out loud,
were mothers to all shattered trusts and broken hearts

He was a stubborn man
he demanded what he could not get
And off he went sulking now,
imagining past deeds of largesse

He was a passive aggressive man
violent anger not his calling card
instead inside his shell he went
and slammed it shut very hard

He was a foolish man
a fool blinded by sweet lies
Have I always been  such a fool?
or blind from birth? he pondered,he wondered.

Flashbacks of a near past
confirmed his worst suspicions
A foolish blind man he was
and a stubborn selfish petty one too

So he wrote an ode to himself
berating his old petty ways
and all those wasted days
spent in vain and futile pain

Now that he wrote an ode to himself
he felt so light and he felt so free
So although he wrote it,instead he gave it to me
Because I was a petty man, a petty man just like he.

Crappy Poet
-----------
I may rhyme after every line
but it's no crime and I'll do no time
rhymo-mania is a crappy word, and
I'm a crappy poet, but I'll do fine

Thank you for tolerating such bad poetry...(which I'm not gonna rhyme
with 'refinery')
Your support is appreciated.

To tell you the truth, poetry bores me.(gasp!)
Yup, I'm a Grade-A philistine.

I don't write poetry, as you can very well see,
these words, terms and turns of phrases
float around in my head and torment me.

I haven't slept today.
The phrase 'Ode to a Petty man' kept ringing in my head.
CLANG CLANG ! (A loud church bell)

These things cannot be ignored, swept away
or there'll be hell to pay
they clamour my attention
seeking a resolution
and until they find it
I'll not be able to sleep.

But now I'm done
and the dawn breaks over the horizon
Kiss your sleep goodnight
and say sweet dreams

Its all about giving love

People will read you if they love you.

Yes...even checking someone else's blog, reading it,posting comments about (good or bad), is the modern version of love...its about giving love.

This is not  familial or spousal love...or the love that you give to someone you actively take care off.

This love is more like the 2 dollars you spend on some trinket in hopes that some hungry kid in africa is fed if you buy it as advertised.

There is physical distance,a lack of attachment, and yet a sense of comradeship, a sense that we belong somewhere, even though the relationship is amorphous and undefined.

Yes, if nobody reads your blog , it means nobody loves you and you're gonna die all alone. Bwahahaha!
No I'm just joking.

This connectedness we have...It makes us feel like we are global citizens,It expands our vision, and by having a glimpse of different veiwpoints makes us larger than our environment, and what our pasts have made us.

Yes.

We are Global Citizens.

We belong to each other.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(So much to read, so little time to comment!

I've read all your recent posts...

I would have posted comments if my internet connection was somewhat better...

In fact I did...

Ms J...I partially solved Becky's mystery.
It's a feeling of unworthiness that most men feel when they are in the presence of a superhottie.

You'll never hear a normal dude say that he wants to be in a relationship with a hot girl...He'd rather f$^k her and be done with it.
A relationship is too much for him to even think about.

Which is why , if a woman is a superhottie, most men will leave her alone, or devise elaborate and indirect approach methods that usually fail.

That's one reason men never approached Becky.

Raknax...I'm trying to model my writing after yours...especially the wonderful yet weird visual imagery you so easily throw in.

Mr.Teh, sorry for not writing a single reply...my connection sucks.

I'll not be posting for another 2 months, because all the ports I go to from now on
will be Hicksville Ports with no civilization around for miles.

But , I still have more to write...and more to read )

Opposites 'Don't' Attract

Do opposites really attract? A new study finds that when it comes to personality, people seek partners with their same qualities — but claim to want someone who is different.

The study, recently published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, asked 760 members of an online dating site to answer questionnaires regarding their personality traits, as well as the traits they would want in an ideal long-term partner. They then were asked if they most wanted a partner that complemented them, or resembled them.

The answers showed a preference for someone with the same sort of personality; the traits, which included neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, all had positive participant-to-partner correlations, ranging from .51 to .62.

These findings are supported by previous research. A study conducted by the University of Iowa in 2005, for example, stated that similarity in personality was more important than similarities in attitude, religion, and values in forming a happy marriage. Like-minded people validate each other's beliefs and views, and there tend to be fewer conflicts as a result.

But despite the personality correlations, the new study has found that 85.7 percent of participants claim to want someone who has their opposite traits.

"When asked about their preferences for a mate, people may partially draw upon lay theories of romantic attraction rather than their true desires for a mate," says Pieternel Dijkstra, a professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the study's lead researcher.

One popular theory is that opposites attract; another is that having a similar partner would be "boring." But Dijkstra says these theories often prove untenable in real life.

"Although many individuals occasionally feel attracted to 'opposites,' attractions between opposites often do not develop into serious intimate relationships and, when they do, these relationships often end prematurely," she said.

The study also found that in addition to looking for a similar partner, women wanted men who were conscientious, outgoing, and emotionally stable, all traits that indicate an investment in the relationship and in any potential children.

However, "there were no particular traits that men seemed to prefer more than women," according to Dijkstra . For both sexes, finding common ground is a top priority.

So remember...

Floodgates

She was beautiful once.

You knew that by the way she acted around other men...sometimes even you.

Such sense of entitlement...that her actions seemed ridiculous, her demands preposterous, now that her glory days were well past her.

We were friends who gradually drifted away.Sometimes people just do that for no apparent reason.

In writing this, I was searching for a quote by Salman Rushdie that went something like "Why are men so interested in women than women in men".

He might have said that, by almighty Google could not find anything remotely close enough. As they say GIGO, or Garbage In , Garbage Out.

The aforementioned quote existed somewhere in this infinite inky vastness called the universe, but my search methods were simply too sloppy to find it.

The general rule of the universe was that men found women very interesting and women found women interseting too.The oppsites simply did not attract each other equally.

She was interesting because of her strange sense of entitlement, becuase of her unflappable belief.Because of the inherent tragedy that was her life(as she made it sound)

What is the strongest part of a man (also woman)?

His belief. At times ,his belief is also his weakest part.

This girl believed stronglyabout certain certainities and events in her life. She believed that deserved the best in life, and that she always got it but with a good fight.

She was vaguely interested in me because I was a man with a forked tongue...silvery lies dripping easily and rolling with mercurial ease.

Here is a genuine Salman Rushdie quote "How come we don’t always know when love begins, but we always know when it ends?”

The man with a forked tongue...I could lie on the fly...outlie everybody with the delicateness and precision of a sushi chef.

The greatest thrill of lying is when you get away with it.The essence of a lie is to believe in it yourself, even if for a fraction of a second, so that the beilef itself is firmly embedded in your psyche.

The effectiveness of my silvery-slithery-slippery untruth was fully realized when she asked me to marry her...well she did not do it in a direct manner as you and I would have done it, but she proposed that we run away somewhere.Always a Drama Queen , her life was full of people who had hurt her, tragedies and traumas that had befallen her and she was always the victim. But a triumphant Victim nonetheless.

Her proposal left me speechless. My forked tongue was all of a sudden impotent and ineffective.

                           Was it desperation?

She was engaged to someone she did not like.

She was forced into the relationship by her parents,as a  price to pay for her past indiscretions. Her assent was the price for her freedom, her emancipation.

My prose might seem overflowing with vacous rhetoric, but this is the only way I can protect her and yet tell my story(which was her story with me in bit roles)

We met yesterday. She seemed distant yet friendly. Her behavior did not indicate any ugly reaction to my sudden disappearance. She asked me if I could drop her someplace.I agreed reluctantly. We had many things to talk about, and things would turn ugly.

She was quiet for a while. Then she said that I had changed. So had she, I told her.She asked me a few dry perfunctory questions about my life.I accused her of avoiding me, while fully knowing it was the other way around.

This opened the floodgates. An outpour that confirmed another one of Salman Rushdie's quotes"The only feeling of real loss is when you love someone more than you love your self.”

                                           It would take time...

I took a wrong turn, and went on the other way.The floodgates had just been opened...the seiches and undulations would take some time to calm down, so I took another wrong turn and headed the opposite way.

As I sensed the tide of anger ebbing away, I headed towards the right direction.I needed to see the seabed uncovered beneath the floodgates that were so deep and held so much.

So I lied once again.

And I let them open.

It was the least I could do.

How far would you go for love?(and other random observations)

Only thoughts can be random...the very act of penning down your thoughts destroys the randomness that was originally present...thus making this title a lie.

Holy Shit!

How would you react if I told you that somewhere in this world, shit is holy,

You'd go (quite predictably) 'Holy Shit!'

But in India, cows are holy, and most things from a cow are equally holy. Thus we have the holy cow, the holy cow's holy milk (and all other milk derivatives like holy butter, holy ghee, holy paneer), holy cow's holy piss, holy cow's holy shit (which we like to call cowdung).

But elsewhere, holy cows make tasty hamburgers!

I wish you all a Happy Holy.(coming soon to a store near you on march 11th)

How far would you go for love?

A: 48 +- 5 km.

God requires topless men!

There are a few temples in india, where if you are a man, you have to go topless to gain entrance(I find it sexist that women are exempted). As a shy boy once upon a time, I had refused to risrobe in front of total strangers.I wanted a valid reason for stripping myself.Mom told me that it was so that god could know that you were literally pure.I bet she didn't know the real reason.

Without a shirt, in India, anyone can know your religion and caste and your general heirarchy in matters of divinity.Brahmins and Kshatriyas wear a holy thread called janiwu and it denotes their upper ranks to the rest of the world.

On that fateful day, I steadfastly refused to take off my shirt.I was no longer shy...rather simply too stubborn.

Disinhibition

I spoke to my ex-neighbour today...we were chatting via IM.

In alll the years we were next to each other, I don't remember talking to her for more than five minutes. Those talks were filled with awkward pauses and silences.Today though, we spoke for two whole hours, and shared things we never would dream of sharing when facing each other. We now know more about each other more than what we knew from the past eleven years that we lived next to each other.

It was possible because we weren't actually talking to each other. We were staring at the monitor and responding to a string of sentences and coded textual information instead of flesh and blood.

Complic8ed

Trying to simplify certain actions tend to over-complicate it...take for instance the act of shaving and break it down into minute steps.(I'll keep it simple)

1)Apply a detergent based foam on face and aerate it with a shaving brush or fingers.

2)Let an approximate time interval pass by so that hair follicles are sufficiently softened and the skin well lubricated.

3)Take a very sharp blade and ritualistically drag it across the skin in an attempt to cut hair follicles and abrade the skin.

4)Rinse and Repeat if necessary (or if required results are not obtained)

5)Your instruments sometimes resemble heat seeking missiles with multiple projectiles.

Lofty claims such as 'The best a man can get' are made.Other lofty claims include cavorting suprmodels who are attracted to a follicularly challenged man.

Sick men are big babies.

Moti bit me.

I took full advantage of it by telling it to anyone who cared to listen and gathered as much sympathy as I could.I also shamelessly let mom pamper me for the last 3 days.

Social Value

I've noticed that it is very easy to approach other girls if you are already with a girl.If you go alone, there is a chance that you'll be labeled a creep.A girl on your side gives you full access to shameless flirting without any negative repercussions.

The presence of a woman by your side also softens up other men...makes them more suggestible and compliant.

Ok...Now I need a girl by my side (preferably smart and beautiful) to rule the world.First , we get all the women to follow us, and then the men will automatically follow.

Practice your BWAHAHAHA well. It'll come in handy.

Different Tastes

I didn't get to watch dilli 6.Now I don't know if it is a bad movie, because I don't believe in what others say.I neither listen to critics nor to the masses.

Tomorrow, I have to go to a movie with a Abhishek Bacchan hating Anglophobe who also hates horror movies and Anurag Kashyap.

The only choice as of now...Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge!

Let me ask you again...

How far would you go for love?

A: Reviews will be posted soon!

So how much do you really know about anyone?

Moti my dog bit me today.

He panicked.

He was always afraid of those big trucks...and one was parked right around the corner near the place we go every evening for our daily walk.

A car came and was about to run over moti.I stopped the car and tried to pull moti towards my side.My hand went to his collar and the truck revved its engine.

He panicked. He bit my right hand ...he literally gnawed on it.

I had to hold my cool and calmly lead moti to safety, which I did, in spite of the throbbing pain and profuse bleeding in my right palm.

Of course, I had to rush to get an anti-rabies shot. With my hand still hurting, mom had to drive. If you seen mom drive, you'll think she's speed racer on a scooter.

She rushed to the store where she knows they are stored in refrigerated conditions(+2  to +8 deg c) and then broke a red light and took me to the clinic. She justified it by telling me that the traffic cop was looking the other way,and that my treatment was first priority.

The nurses couldn't teasing me.

They insisted that they give the intra-muscular injection to the buttocks.Their reason was that it hurt a lot less.

Sure! Gluteus Maximus is the largest muscle but hey! I'm in pain! And I'm in no mood to strip!

I told them that my shoulder would have to do...

Finally they complied and jabbed it deep into my left shoulder.

Wow! More than the pain, I'm hurt that Moti would actually bite me so hard.Oh Yes...My hand has a few deep punctures, and it is throbbing like a  (insert appropriate simile).

I don't know , but I'm feeling really low after getting bitten. Its a combination of physical pain and mental, I guess.

Have You Told Her How You Feel?

Have you told her how you feel ?

I hate this question.
The answer is
No.

I haven't told her how I feel.

I don't trust my feelings.

Why is it so important that I have to tell her my feelings ?
Isn't it  too early ?
Or Is it too late ?

Will somebody tell me?

I dont trust the volatility of my feelings(or hers).

Sometimes I'm a lusty animal,
and sometimes I feel like worshipping her.
Sometimes I hate her,
and sometimes I just don't care.

There's a constant circus in my pants.
but that's just my head playing mind games with me.

So , have I told her how I feel ?

No.

Not really.

Frankly speaking, I don't know how I feel.

Women go for better looking men !

Times have changed !

A gradual role reversal is happening.Women are now choosing mates more based on their looks than intelligence and men prioritize intelligence in the women that they want.(Well, at least men like Me !)

This was proven in a BBC TV programme called Tomorrow's World, where in an experiment devised by noted British psychiatrist Dr.Raj Persaud, the viewing public was presented with two pictures of members of the opposite sex who definitely varied in terms of physical attractiveness- one was obviously prettier or more handsome than the other.Beneath each picture was a kind of lonely hearts column Dr.Raj Persaud had composed in which the person in the photograph was inviting the viewer of the programme to accompany them on a romantic weekend in the Caribbean. The wording was more or less the same, but there were subtle differences which should have been so minor as to operate below conscious awareness.

In one script , for instance , the person invited you to swim in the shimmering blue sea;in the other you were invited to swim in the shimmering azure sea.The viewers were then asked to choose the person they would prefer to go away with.Complex vocabulary was used as a proxy for education or intelligence.

The surprising finding was that women went more for looks in their choice of men, while the men prioritzed intelligence in their choice of women.Just the use of words like 'azure' significantly swung the audience towards the lesser physically attractive person, indicating that the public generally were voting for intelligence over looks, yet amazingly this was more marked in the voting of men.

This would be good news to all women who think they are not pretty enough and really bad news to all men who think they are not !
