The Dark Knight

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
What makes a movie great ?
It's not the plot in itself.
It's not about structure.
It's not about character.
It's about emotion.
There are three kinds of feelings when you watch a movie-boredom, interest and WOW !
Its all about the emotional impact of the movie on its viewers.

One word for "The Dark Knight ' would be WOW!
The movie is in no way cheesy.
Whereas Batman stands for justice, the Joker stands for pure chaos and anarchy. The joker understands that as a super villain , he needs a superhero on the other end of the spectrum.
The joker is truly enigmatic as he is evil for the sake of being evil and has no hidden agenda. He is there to test the limits of gotham city and its inhabitants.
No one is spared as they come under the spell of the joker and they are forced to meet their true selves.
While the majority don't buckle under joker , Harvey Dent is pushed over the edge and he becomes what he himself hates - a vigilante trying to avenge an unfair death.
Batman , on the other hand proves to be incorruptible and the joker himself acknowledges it.

The movie is dark and brooding. It has a very cool bike and cool scenes like the abduction of Lau from HongKong , which increased the movie's cool factor by tenfold.
BTW, did anyone notice Nokia's new iPod killer 'The Tube' in the movie ?
All in all , a great movie , which I need not reiterate unnecessarily.

  1. If you liked the movie (who wouldn't) i recommend reading "The Long Halloween". A very good take on Harvey Dents descent to Madness.

  2. i disagree with the harvey dent becomes what he hates, a vigilante.

in fact the film propose dent long to be a vigilante like batman. there had been a fonding contrast between the dark knight and the white knight of gotham, on how they would prefer each other's role. batman marvel at how dent had single handedly without any shed of blood incriminate half of gotham's criminals. on the other hand dent long to fight crime beyond the judicial system which more than often prove to be fallible to the rich thugs.

    joker is spellbinding simply.

in the comic, batman had often prided himself to think five steps ahead of everyone, he always, always have a plan. HL's joker in the film planned it seems twenty steps ahead, goading everyone into his game. batman unfortunately in this film had been dragged by his nostril, struggling to keep up.

it should have titled 'the dark clown' instead.

nevertheless i love this movie so much that i want to marry this movie and have little kids with it.

  5. http://jimsmash.blogspot.com/2008/03/batman-killing-joke-re-colored.html

This page has a good comparision of both editions. Spoilers for the book are also there. I have read both, and the use of Black and White in the flashbacks along with the blood from the Jokers eyes just elevate the anniversary edition

  8. I may be wrong, but The Joker succeeds in corrupting Harvey Dent but not Batman, to which he admits.

Have you noticed that in the comics , Batman has slowly evolved into a supergenius ?
Especially in JLA , where he is the only superhero with no superpowers. This is where he becomes inhumanly intelligent and weilds technology far beyond anything anyone else has , all because the writers want to bridge the gap between Batman (who is just a man) and other superheroes (who are much more thanks to their origins or freak accidents or destiny).
Atleast in the movie he uses the help of Fox , where as in the comics he is almost alone(apart from alfred)

Also I agree that in the movie , joker is far ahead of everyone else, actually to the point of impossibility.

I second your opinion to retitle the movie "The Dark Clown (and a man in a batsuit who likes to hit at his mama)"
    Cheers

  9. The Batman mythos in the comics is heading for an overhaul. Grant Morrison is in the middle of an arc called "Batman:RIP" download the e-books if you can find them. It starts in Batman#676 and has reached till part 3 right now. Bruce Wayne is a broken man who has been demoted to the streets and is wandering high on coke.

It is as trippy as it sounds. I have rediscovered my love for comics recently and have read a lot of stuff, but Batman keeps getting to the top of the list everytime.

  10. Hmm ..I've actually seen these comics...No time to download them though.
Most of my comic book knowledge is from the collection they had in Reader's Delight which I haven't visited in quite a few years now...

  11. karthikcg, i read the link and decided that i would prefer the original coloring of the killing joke, the new coloring just too darn plain. i'm intending to purchase the book, do you perchance know how to tell if which is the original coloring and which is the special edition?

  12. ah come on, dun even get me started on JLA. i cannot even begin to understand why they made batman join that queer club in the first place. batman as a very unique dark character with psychological issues facing even psychotic enemies in his own saga was actually DOWNGRADED into a brooding antihero in JLA, not unlike wolverine in xmen.

i read JLA because it's DC, the brithright of batman. the rest of the character is plain lame. (probably except wonder woman), then i gave it up and just concentrate on DC remaining two character which was fascinating - batman and swamp thing. the only JLA book i would recommend is kingdom come by alex ross where superman is a brawling baby in front of the arrogant bruce wayne.

more of batman kicking superman's dipshit ass: the dark knight returns and the dark knight strikes back by frank miller.

  13. @raknax: Simple way to tell the difference, the Anniversary edition has the flashback pages in black and white with one item in red in each panel, all other editions have it in the psychedelic coloring.

Regarding Batman and the JLA. Read "Tower of Babel", an amazing arc in which Batman's secret files on the JLA are used to bring them down one by one. Its just an amazing arc, i had read it in TPB form.

I disagree with you about Kingdom Come though, it is, above all else, a Superman story. The panel where Superman come out of retirement was my Desktop wallpaper for quite some time just for its iconic factor. Couldnt find the panel, but a similar pic is here: http://www.geocities.com/puntozeqk/Superman_KingdomCome.jpg

Also, check out the just concluded "K" Arc in Superman/Batman. The final panel is just classic Batman.

  15. karthikcg, is there a more direct way to tell if the comic is special or original edition by not opening the package and read it. usually the books on the shelves were wrapped in plastic.

  16. Well, the title itself is different. It has 20th anniversary deluxe edition written on it. That is the only version u need to avoid. All other editions have the old coloring itself
